Chicco Flip ‘N Play Table

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

A flip and play table makes it all the more fun since it’s new every day. With this table, the child can play on one side and have loads of fun. Then the next day, flip it and it’s a whole new world. The table stands 13 inches up, perfect for a young person who is just learning to stand or just did learn to stand. There is a lever that activates an attached train that goes in a circle. And a button next to the lever activates a train sound. There are three each of letters and numbers to insert, a flipbook of circus animals, a clock with hands that spin, a mobile of spinning balls and a miniature rotary phone.

When the child tires of that side, just flip it over and the fun begins again with building blocks of squares, rectangles, pyramids, circles plus cat and dog heads too. All of this is included in the set. That really isn’t all. You can also add to this table of fun with other accessories which are available separately. Right before you open the case with the new table inside, just grab a cup of coffee from your new capresso machine because you owed yourself the indulgence! Then make a kid happy with this very nice table of activities to keep a young mind busy for quite a while.

Recommended for ages 1 year and up. 2 AA batteries are required which are included in the set.

Kapla Toys: Wooden Building Sets

I discovered this company while looking for really good toys, something that is somewhat lacking at times. This is a building set but not just any building set. The pieces are not interlocking like Lincoln Logs, not click together like Legos, not stick together like Tinker Toys. Each plank is made out of pine and are 1 inch by 4 and a quarter inch by a quarter inch. These planks make up the sum total of what you have to work with. There are no nails, glue or any form of putting together except gravity and balance. It is definitely a skill exercise. The planks come in seven different colors so that the building is unique and interesting. When you are ready to dismantle it, you simply pull a few planks out until the whole thing topples.

What these sets can build is up to the person doing the building. They sell the sets in 40 pieces to 1000 pieces. A new set with 200 pieces is coming soon. All sets come in….a pine box, naturally.

I was unable to get the recommended ages for this. But it is very simple but difficult. These would not be for very young children.

TinkerToy Building Sets

When I thought about my own Tinkertoy Set, I remembered how much fun I had building really strange things. A friend and I would play with the Tinkertoys for hours. It never occurred to me that they would some day be play things for my own kids or even grandkids. You could make vehicles, buildings and all sorts of alien stuff although, at the time, I do not believe we thought of it as alien, just something from our imagination. And it was so much fun to have such toys for hours on end. Yet, it takes imagination. Sometimes, the kids toys today just do not allow for that imagination to get into play. It’s all there for you already.

These Tinkertoy sets include both wooden and plastic parts. They appear to be smallish. The manufacturer suggests these are for ages 3 and up but if you have a 3 year old that still puts a lot of things in his or her mouth, I would suggest holding off on buying this toy for them. An older brother or sister would benefit more from this Tinkertoy set than at that particular age. You can find these toys at Hasbro’s website.
